Project Aim

This is a PhD programme of research undertaken between EDC and Orangebox, a furniture design company based in Wales. It is an interdisciplinary study drawing on product design, materials science and communications. The project is exploring how ecodesign communications and knowledge transfer can be optimised for a company like Orangebox. It looks specifically at how access to materials information affects implementation of ecodesign practices in Small to Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs).

EDC’s Involvement

The research includes an assessment of material selection processes through New Product Development (NPD) within Small to Medium Size Enterprises. It is also specifically looking at integration of tools and methodologies such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Cradle-to-Cradle (C2C) in the furniture sector and how such tools can contribute to embedding lifecycle thinking in Small to Medium Size Enterprises.

Key Project Outcomes

The project is ongoing but in its initial phase has delivered key ecodesign knowledge to Orangebox including:
  • The research has involved engaging with Orangebox staff, suppliers, moulders, recyclers, research institutes and other organisations to gain deep insights into the current state of material selection in the furniture sector
  • International best practice approaches as well as challenges associated with utilising Life Cycle Assesment for Small to Medium Size Enterprises
  • Feasibility to utilisation of bio-derived materials as well as a deeper understanding of the state of the biomaterials market internationally
  • A broad understanding of ecodesign behaviour within the furniture sector through supply chain engagement and competitor analysis

Engaging in the KESS partnership with EDC and the universities within Wales is an exciting opportunity for us. This focused body of research can only enhance our ability to become a leading edge SME within the global market. The knowledge and expertise we'll gain will translate into commercial benefits due to the competitive advantages achieved as a result of the outputs of this programme.

What we've been writing about.

  • material matters

I gave this presentation last week at Orangebox to update them on my PhD research progress, which they support. It proposes a framework for formalising material selection strategies.
